Tameside

Tameside the area.

Tameside is a predominantly urban area to the east of Greater Manchester stretching from the city of Manchester to the Peak District. The town shares borders with Manchester, Stockport, Oldham and the Derbyshire borough of High Peak. Tameside is well connected to the region and beyond by the M60 and M67 motorways and quality rail links to Manchester and Yorkshire.

Tameside consists of 9 towns and 141 Super Output Areas (SOA), with ten SOAs in the 5% most deprived nationally. These are areas smaller than a ward but with high levels of multiple deprivation. Tameside is improving at a faster rate than other areas. Although it is the 56th most deprived borough nationally it has moved up seven places (i.e. less deprived) in the Index of Multiple Deprivation since 2004.

Tameside is also divided into eight District Assembly areas. Their purpose is to give the residents of Tameside a greater input into decisions about their local area each having a devolved budget. Each District Assembly holds regular meetings where individuals can obtain information, influence decisions and voice opinions regarding their community. The meetings are attended by the elected ward councillors together with local residents, businesses, and voluntary and community groups.
