The City of Manchester sits at the centre of the Greater Manchester, bordering 7 or the other 9 areas in the county.
The city is the commercial, educational and cultural focus for North West England, hosting 2 universities and an estimated student population of around 75,000. The city has several shopping centers including the Manchester Arndale, the UK's largest inner city shopping mall.
The M60 and M56 motorways pass through the south of Manchester and rail lines enter the city from all directions, the principal destinations being Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria Station. In 1992 Metrolink trams came into operation using a new network of 23 miles of track and 37 stations, of which five can be found in the city centre. Manchester Airport services the Northwest Region and is the busiest in terms of passenger traffic in the UK outside London, serving 21.06 million passengers in 2008.
The city is one of the largest financial centers in Europe and The Co-operative Group and Granada Television base their company headquarters in the city centre.
Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and among its other sporting connections are its two Premier League football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City. The city also has two large theatres and a host of conferencing and exhibition centers. The multifunctional MEN Arena is one of the largest and busiest indoor arenas in Europe staging music concerts to craft and wedding fairs.
