Salford
Salford the area
Salford has a long industrial legacy with a history of coal-mining, textiles and heavy engineering along with what was Britain's major inland ocean-going port. The demise of Salford's traditional industries (including the effective closure of the port) from the 1970s left many scars which are now beginning to heal as major new developments are changing the face of the city. The developments on Salford Quays, with its associated Lowry Centre, has become a focus for re-generation in the area.
The City still maintains as much industrial and commercial activity including several important chemical plants, and has seen a growth in high-tech enterprises, particularly in the Quays area. The City of Salford covers 37 square miles and consistes of the five districts of Salford, Eccles, Worsley, Irlam & Cadishead, and Swinton & Pendlebury. Salford remains an important transport hub with major motorway and rail routes and a small but busy aerodrome at Barton. The Ship Canal is still used for cargo as far upstream as Eccles. Salford is home to Salford City Reds, a super league rugby club attracting scores of supporters each year. The city is also home to Britain's largest inland waterway, 1 airport, 1 leading UK University, the UK's Triathlon World Cup, 1 5-star hotel and only 1 minute away from Manchester City Centre.
