We're committed to making sure that everyone in Greater Manchester has the chance to have their say on the police and crime issues that matter to them. To do this effectively and shape a police service that is fit for all, it's important that we fully understand the needs of Greater Manchester's wonderfully diverse communities.
We're also proud to promote equality in the workplace.
By making our information and services available to Greater Manchester's diverse communities, we're better able to serve the people of Greater Manchester and shape a police service that truly meets their needs.
Decisions made with equalities, diversity and human rights issues in mind will lead to a better, more accessible police and police authority service for the public.
As we serve the whole of the Greater Manchester region and its diverse population, we need to understand the needs of all the eight protected characteristics, and to make sure that our policies, procedures and services take the needs of these protected groups into account.
Our engagement programme helps us learn more about these communities and their needs, and this year's programme, Embracing Difference 2012, is themed around the protected characteristics.
In November 2012 the police authority will be replaced by a directly elected police and crime commissioner. During transition and hand-over, we will make sure that equality issues remain on the agenda.
These pages tell you more about the work we're doing around equality and diversity, and how we make sure we serve Manchester's communities and protected groups. You can also read a report from the Confidence and Equalities Sub-committee which talks in detail about the sort of information we should publish with regards to the Equality Act 2010.
