Human rights

Since March 2008, police authorities have been required to monitor the compliance of their police forces in relation to the duties imposed by the Human Rights Act 1998.

Every police authority has to provide an independent custody visiting scheme to make sure that the force is doing what it should be doing with regards to human rights and custody services. The following articles of the human rights act are of particular relevance:

Everyone has the right:

  • not to be tortured or treated in an inhuman or degrading way
  • to no punishment without law

Our independent custody visitors are given equality training on human rights issues and checklists to help them pick up on the important issues.

Our committee reports all contain an equalities, diversity and human rights implications section. This means due regard is paid to human rights and equalities issues for each and every issue presented to the authority. Read more about decision making.
