Lay Members
Every police authority has a legal duty to appoint two independent members, known as Lay Members, to sit on a Standards Committee. The Standards Committee has seven legal duties. It must:
- Give the authority advice on adopting a local Code of Conduct
- Monitor the effectiveness of the Code
- Train members on the Code or arrange for such training
- Promote and maintain a high standard of conduct for members
- Help members to follow the Code of Conduct
- Deal with applications for dispensations
- Deal with determinations at a local level
The two current lay members are Ms Chris Berry who is the chair of the Standards Committee, and Mr John Place, who is the vice chair. They are joined by, Mrs Sharron Hardman, Cllr Joe Kitchen, Cllr Bernard Sharp, and Elaine Belton who are the other members of the Standards Committee.
