Scrutinising and challenging Greater Manchester Police's performance is a key part of our role and a responsibility we take very seriously.
Police Authority members meet regularly with the Chief Constable and other members of the Force's senior leadership team to undertake an in-depth look at performance. This enables us to ensure that the Force is identifying any emerging crime and anti-social behaviour trends and targeting resources to address those issues effectively.
It's important that our communities know what their police force is doing and how they are performing so that they can feel confident that GMP continues to improve.
The chief constable presents a comprehensive report on Policing Plan priorities and targets to police authority members on a quarterly basis. This is looked at in detail during police authority meetings attended by all members.
In the period between the meetings of the authority where performance is scrutinised, a Performance Group, made up of six authority members and the executive director, regularly meets with the chief constable and deputy chief constable to discuss issues relating to force performance and any other emerging issues. The chief constable and deputy chief constable are questioned and challenged by authority members and asked to provide details of how the force is working to improve performance.
As the nature of the information discussed is often highly sensitive and confidential, the meeting cannot be held in public. However, following each meeting, the Scrutiny Team produces a police performance group feedback document which provides a summary of issues discussed and any actions agreed. The most recent of these can be accessed using the links available. An archive of older reports is also available.
The HMIC Crime Comparator website provides an additional tool to allow the public to hold their police force to account.
However, it's also important to put the figures into context. GMP has put together a Common Statement of Performance which details the daily challenges faced by officers and also highlights what GMP is doing to make Greater Manchester a safer place to live, work and visit.
