Police Property Act Fund

Twice a year, Greater Manchester Police Authority awards grants to voluntary and charitable organisations which solely benefit the communities of Greater Manchester. The money is taken from the Police Property Act Fund. This fund is made up of money received by the police through the sale of property which has been confiscated by order of the court.

Awards for grants are secured through an application process. Applications from statutory organisations and those in receipt of substantial and on-going local or national government funding are not considered. Community groups in receipt of a one-off start up grant are eligible to apply. Details of specific exclusions are listed in the 'Guidance Notes for Applicants' document which can be downloaded below.

A Police Property Act Fund Board initially vets applications before they are referred to the Finance, Assets and Technology Resources Committee for a decision. The Board consists of five police authority members, the Fund Administrator and the Treasurer. The Board meets periodically throughout the year to consider applications. In March/April and September/October each year a report is submitted to the Finance, Assets and Technology Resources Committee with details of recommended awards for approval. The deadlines for submission of applications to these meetings are January 31 and July 10 respectively. Any applications which miss a specific deadline will be considered at a subsequent meeting however applications for money to fund projects which are due to take place prior to the next meeting will be rejected.

Applications for awards must meet one of the following criteria:

  • To create opportunities for children and young people to get involved in extra-curricular activities.
  • To promote safety and reduce the fear of crime amongst the elderly and vulnerable, including victims of crime, by providing support and advice.
