At the start of 2011, Greater Manchester Police Authority's engagement team began a three-year 'Trust and Confidence in Greater Manchester Police' longitudinal study.
One secondary school from each of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester has signed up to the project which allows us to engage and consult with their students on an annual basis.
During each school-based event up to 120 year seven or eight students attend a structured event consisting of a consultation, a question time style session facilitated by a local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), and a demonstration from a specialist branch of Greater Manchester Police.
The workshops are designed not only to gain the views of the students taking part, but to also encourage young people to interact with officers in a safe environment and give them a chance to learn more about specialist areas of policing - for example forensics, firearms, and dog handlers.
By following the same students over a period of time we will hopefully identify trends in how views on policing are shaped, which will provide data to be used by NPTs. This information can then be used to react to any negative feeling towards the police that may arise within the community.
Year one of this study completes by January 2012, year two by January 2013, and year three by January 2014.
Thanks very much to all the schools taking part!
Whenever we visit a school we ask pupils to complete a policing priorities questionnaire. Here's a snapshot of the stats from 2011.
The results:

Please note:
The policing priorities data from schools is not collected in the same way as at the policing priorities questionnaires issued at other engagement events, and therefore the results are not entirely comparable.
